The (in)famous Buck Preston. A jewel in the crown of Charleston society, Mary Chesnut said that she was one of the sweetest girls she ever did meet, and that whomever met her, fell in love with her. Unfortunately, it seems that the price of loving her often entailed horrible injury and death, but it didn't seem to slow down her admirers much at all. John Bell Hood, who lost a leg during the war and at one time had been her fiance, loved her intensely, but the marriage was not meant to be. More about their rocky relationship here:
Whether it was the fortunes of war, or other powers in play, Buck finally did marry in 1868. Sadly she would only live to see the age of 38, dying in 1880.
