The National Archives holds 1.28 million case files of pension applications from family members of deceased Civil War Union soldiers. This Inside the Vaults video short follows a team of more than sixty volunteers, led by National Archives staff, which is digitizing the files and placing them online for researchers and the general public for the Civil War Widows Pension Project.
At pushing 4 million documents uploaded thus far, the project is listed as only 5% complete. The records are available on Fold3, which is a subscription service. The nice thing about this website is, you can annotate documents as you work with them, which perhaps will help someone else who comes along doing research. It's also neat to read some of the more excited comments when someone strikes genealogical or research gold.
