Exceptional Pieced and Appliqued Cotton Album Quilt including Designs of a Cat, Birds, Flowering Urns, and Fruit, probably Pennsylvania, Dated 1862, five-square by five-square quilt in reds, greens, yellows, oranges, pinks, and blues, each square featuring a unique pieced and applique design, including the following: five birds perched on branches, four birds building a nest in a tree, crossed flowering cornucopias, a pineapple, various floral and heart motifs, a large green fruit, a footed urn with a flowering plant and three birds as well as four roosters at the corners, four bunches of grapes, various other flowering urn motifs, as well as one square with a bird, pear, stars, flowers, and cherries, and an extraordinary square initialed "H V P," featuring the following: a wreath bordering grapes, surrounded by two flying birds holding grapes, two birds perched on flowers, a star, and a calico cat with collar and ball of yarn. Two-inch red squares at the corners of each appliqued square. The following signatures, written in ink or embroidered, can be found on the quilt: Hannah Wortendyke May 17th, 1862, The Swallow ME, SC, Mrs. H. Perry, Effie Wortendyke, and T(?)C. A fresh-to-the-market example with imaginative designs and great visual appeal. Some staining. A loss to one embroidered middle initial, and a few minor losses to applique. Possible 1940s repair to blue areas of applique. Dimensions: 82"x 80".
